Simple answer is, Yes as long as it's a reasonable amount "for personal use". if in doubt declare it on your customs entry form.

My advice is to always declare anything questionable. That way if you do have something you are not supposed to be bringing in it will be seized, but you won't likely create suspicion. If you try to slip something past the border officials, and a sniffer dog or random check finds it, you could be in for greater grief.

I'd be way more concerned if those jars of pickles opened up inside your suitcases! Ick.

Mostly they do not care about foodstuffs at customs in Germany, to the point where you hardly ever see anyone declare anything and the counters are unmanned. Assuming of course that you are carrying reasonable quantities as a gift or for personal consumption.

I am surprised you would bring pickles (gherkins?) - Germany has pickles galore in the supermarkets. You can even buy the liquid separately to drink!

Germany has loads of pickle items and sweets. I am curious why you would want to bring them.
And I wouldn't want a pickle jar to leak in my luggage!!

Unless you are traveling from Switzerland or Belgium, don't even bother! In Germany there are much better pickles and sweets than whatever you plan to bring over (unless it's Swiss or Belgium).
If you absolutely must, bring whatever you want for personal use. Nobody cares much.

I have seen everything in luggage. I would ask you wrap it very well as I have seen so many broken leaky containers that have broke and leaked through other suitcases. Red wine is the worse for damage but a gallon of pickled eggs was one of the smelliest. Bug killer in gallon containers is hazmat but people don't seem to think that. The concentrated weed killer. I should write a book. You know one time a guy checked a toilet going to Russia. I think that is why the Olympics got so many toilet pics. This guy was taking one home with him so he could have a real working toilet. It is a luxury. I just always wondered if it made it in one piece.

You know one time a guy checked a toilet going to Russia.

I have an Ethiopian coworker who checked a kitchen sink on her flight to Ethiopia. Why? because she's building a house and she wanted a "European-style" kitchen sink.

I flew from the U.S. to Germany with a jar of Dogfish Head pickles so I can see why someone would want to bring pickles over.

Put it into a ziplock bag, tape the bag closed around the jar, and make sure that it is padded well. When I transport breakables, I sometimes pack them in a box padded with clothing. This has worked well for me.
